Sarah Shephard (Senior Writer, Sport Magazine)

I joined Sport in November 2006 in the midst of issue number eight being produced. I had been working as an assistant editor on the magazines produced by estate agent Foxtons – a job which required plenty of proof reading but far too little writing for my liking. In my spare time I started writing articles which I hoped might be published by a lifestyle magazine and which were picked up by the editor of a free magazine called Optima.

When the first issue of Sport was published on September 29 2006 I emailed the editor, Simon Caney immediately with examples of my work and offered my services as a freelancer. Fortunately my email arrived at the right time and he asked to meet for coffee, a meeting which obviously went well. On my first day I was handed a Dictaphone and told I would be going out to interview the sailor Dee Caffari the next day; my first ever interview. Fortunately she was great, it went well and since then I have interviewed a host of sports people from Roger Federer to Paula Radcliffe and Usain Bolt.

I also planned and put together Sport Woman which launched in March this year. We’ve published two issues so far with another planned before the end of 2009. Hopefully it can help raise the profile of sportswomen – something which finally seems to be on an upward curve.
